When asked what do you do for a living? I am proud to say that I am a stay at home mom who does freelance paralegal work on the side. I was raised by a single parent who never had enough time for me or my sister because she had to work or was too tired from working.
I get mixed reactions when I tell people what I do. Most of the women say "good for you, I am jealous". But then I get the chuckle from the men who think because I am not in a big office, working my way up the corporate ladder that I am not as smart as them and I can't compete.
Aren't they wrong. Actually, I think most stay at home parents are more intelligent then those who work. Why? Because we are forced to remember basic education.
You see depending on what age your child is you are forced to remember that useless information you were taught in school. For example, in school we were taught about hard and soft minerals. As an adult how many times in your job history or even day to day living have you actually had to explain or even know the difference between hard and soft minerals? Unless you are a Geologist you really don't need to know a whole lot. Well, as a stay at home parent you need to know this information to not only be able to show your child that this stuff is important to learn and that you are not dumb but to help with homework, study for tests, and those pop quizzes kids like to give just to see how much you really know.
There are many countries who take pride in their stay at home parents, but here in America the richest country in the world we see it as a weakness even with our studies of how better children do if they have a parent at home, and our technology. We need more resources so those parents who stay at home are able to do so and not feel guilty because they are not contributing financially, and they need respect. After all they do have the hardest job in the world.... raising our future world leaders.
